the brown autumn leaves had fallen
the warmth had eloped with the summer
'n the night was nothing but sullen
as the waters roared with a shimmer
the September stars above
struggled to shine bright
their pains itched every nerve
as they ran out of might
with every hoot of the owl
'n every chirp of the cricket
they counted miles with a crawl
nothing was as sour as self-let defeat
the dark clouds hung low
'n the heavy torrents washed their tears dry
nothing they could do more
but watch victory leap by
their backs were drooped
battered to the bone
their spirits were dimmed
from reality they shun
they desperately clung to the last straw
hoping hard, they don't lose the grip
what to tell their families, they couldn't draw
with each second, they advanced the dark pit
